Healthy Foods to Help Your Teen Fight Acne

According to Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at the USC Keck School of Medicine, "Acne is the most common skin condition occurring in adolescents. Acne can have a devastating effect on a teen's self-image."
Foods rich in Vitamins A, C, D, and E can help your teen's skin stay healthy and zit free. Also, remind them to drink plenty of water every day. The following foods provide the added nutrients and minerals for fighting pimple outbreaks and giving your teen or tween a more positive outlook.
Vitamin A Foods
Vitamin A is important for healthy skin, hair, and mucous membranes.
Vegetables - Broccoli, carrots, chard, collards, kale, peas and carrots, green and red peppers, pumpkin, romaine lettuce, spinach, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and turnip greens
Fruits - Apricots, cantaloupe, cherries, mango, honeydew melon, nectarines, papaya, peaches, purple plums, and watermelon
Proteins - Eggs, liver, low fat yogurt, and mackerel
Grains - Oatmeal, fortified cereal
Milk - fortified with vitamin A
Vitamin C Foods
Vitamin C an important source for the formation of collagen and is an antioxidant.

Vitamin D is important for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, building strong bones and builds the immune system. Ten minutes of sunshine each day also provides vitamin D to the body.

Dairy - vitamin D fortified milk, vitamin D fortified yogurt, margarine, Swiss cheese
Protein - egg, liver
Juice - vitamin D fortified orange juice
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is important for reproduction, helps prevent heart disease, prevents inflammation, and has antioxidant properties.
Nuts - pumpkin seeds, pecans, walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, peanuts, sunflower seeds, cottonseed, safflower seeds
Grains - oatmeal, whole wheat, rice, barley
